Gua Sha Therapy:
Ancient Healing, Modern Results

A 2,000-year-old healing technique now backed by modern research. Smooth-edged tools applied with deliberate strokes to stimulate microcirculation, release fascial adhesions, and activate your body's natural healing response — for both face and body.

More Than a Wellness Trend

Gua Sha (pronounced "gwah-shah") originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine. The technique involves using a smooth tool — typically jade, rose quartz, or stainless steel — to apply firm, controlled strokes along the skin's surface. This stimulates the movement of qi (energy) and blood beneath the skin.

Modern research confirms what practitioners have known for centuries: Gua Sha triggers a local anti-inflammatory response, increases surface microcirculation by up to 400%, and promotes the release of fascial tension held deep in the tissue. At Ataha Wellness, our practitioners are trained in both traditional technique and evidence-based application.

Two Distinct Protocols

We offer Gua Sha in two focused forms, each with its own technique, tools, and goals.

Facial

Facial Gua Sha

Gentle strokes along facial contours using a specially shaped jade or rose quartz tool. Targets puffiness, sluggish lymphatic drainage, facial tension, and skin dullness. A deeply relaxing treatment with visible results from the first session.

💆
Body

Therapeutic Body Gua Sha

Applied to the neck, shoulders, back, and limbs using traditional downward strokes. Breaks up adhesions in the fascia, releases muscle tension, and improves circulation in areas of chronic pain or stiffness. Particularly effective for postpartum recovery.

Benefits Our Clients Experience

🌊

Lymphatic Drainage

Moves stagnant lymphatic fluid, reducing puffiness and facial bloating within sessions.

Facial Lifting

Repeated sessions tone facial muscles and improve the appearance of jawline and cheekbone definition.

💆

Tension Release

Dissolves chronic neck, shoulder, and back tension — especially valuable for desk workers and new mothers.

🌸

Postpartum Recovery

Supports circulation in abdominal and pelvic areas after delivery, complementing our postpartum rehabilitation program.

🩸

Improved Circulation

Research shows Gua Sha increases local microcirculation by up to 400% — accelerating tissue recovery and oxygen delivery.

🧖

Skin Brightening

Increases collagen synthesis and improves skin texture with regular treatment, reducing the appearance of dullness and fine lines.

How a Session Works at Ataha Wellness

1

Consultation & Assessment

Your practitioner discusses your goals, health history, and any contraindications. We assess the areas of concern and select the appropriate tools and pressure.

2

Skin Preparation

The treatment area is cleansed and a facial oil or body balm is applied to allow smooth tool movement without friction. This also nourishes the skin barrier.

3

Gua Sha Application

Deliberate, rhythmic strokes are applied following the direction of lymphatic flow and muscle anatomy. Pressure and technique vary by area and your sensitivity. Sessions last 45–60 minutes.

4

Post-Treatment Care

You'll receive personalised aftercare advice: hydration guidance, what to expect in the 24–48 hours after, and a recommended treatment frequency for your goals.

What to Know Before Booking

Facial Gua Sha is very gentle — most clients describe it as deeply relaxing. Body Gua Sha involves firmer pressure and some temporary redness (petechiae) is normal and expected on the body, indicating increased circulation. This fades within 2–4 days and is not bruising. We always calibrate pressure to your comfort.
Many clients see visible results (reduced puffiness, improved skin tone) after their first facial session. For therapeutic body treatment (tension, postpartum recovery), we typically recommend 4–6 weekly sessions to achieve lasting results. Maintenance sessions monthly thereafter.
Facial Gua Sha is generally safe during pregnancy. Body Gua Sha requires assessment — certain areas and acupressure points are avoided during pregnancy. Our practitioners are trained in prenatal contraindications and will adapt the treatment accordingly. Please mention your pregnancy at booking.
For 24–48 hours after: avoid cold water on treated areas, heavy exercise, alcohol, and direct sun exposure. Drink plenty of water to support lymphatic flushing. Apply SPF if going outdoors after a facial Gua Sha session.
Yes — Gua Sha pairs well with acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and pelvic floor rehabilitation. Many of our clients incorporate it into a broader wellness program at Ataha. We'll suggest the best combination based on your goals at your initial consultation.
